5 Tips for Moving in the Winter

People often try to avoid a move in the winter, but sometimes you have no control over when you move. Perhaps a change in circumstances has meant you need to move now, or maybe it took you longer to find a home than you expected. In any case, there are a few things to do to make the move less stressful.

1. Start Packing Now

Prevent a rush a couple days before your move by packing things ahead of time. You’ll likely find that you have plenty of belongings you only use occasionally. Pack these in advance, leaving just what you’ll need between now and moving day.

2. Be Ready to Change Moving Day

There’s always a risk that the weather will change from the original forecast — and poor weather conditions may make it difficult to move on the day you intended. Find a moving company that will allow you to reschedule in the case of a storm or heavy snowfall. An advantage of moving in the winter is the lower demand for moving services, meaning most should be willing to accommodate you.

3. Make Your Home Safe for Moving Boxes

Accidents can happen before you’re even out on the road if the area around your house is icy or covered in snow. Plus, a skid on the ice could cause someone to drop a box and break fragile items. Clear a wide enough path in the snow to be able to remove boxes and furniture from your house safely and ensure the ice is fully melted on the steps, driveway, and sidewalk.

4. Wrap Breakable Items in Blankets

A second way to prevent fragile items from breaking is to wrap them in blankets. This is important in the winter because they’ll be leaving your warm home and entering a cold moving truck. The sudden change in temperature could cause some items to crack.

5. Protect Your Floors

Since movers will be walking in and out of your house, dragging dirt and melted ice with them, you’ll need to take steps to protect your flooring. The last thing you want is to be cleaning carpets before you can leave your old home. The best method is to cover floors with plastic sheets that are thick enough to prevent scratches.

If you need to move as soon as possible, speed up the process by receiving pre-approval for a mortgage from a mortgage broker. Leduc residents have Flare Mortgage Group. Call us to start the process.
